Community is Out There

Over the years, I’ve had friends and family tell me that they struggle with finding a community. While this post not speak to you, it might to someone, so here’s an option for you that might help you connect.

Our tea setup towards the end of our event.

Quick little story… or maybe just a rant.

The past weekend I had the pleasure of participating in a tea meditation session that was put together by our local library. (Side note: If you haven’t checked out the events happening at your local library, you’re missing out! They’re often free for you and is a great way to meet people with a common interest in your area.)

I’ve never attended a tea meditation before and the flyer told me it was going to be 90 minutes of tea and silence. I love tea, and I love silence, but to be in a group with strangers in silence for that long kind of scared me. I actually thought about backing out because the more that I thought about it, the more I psyched myself out. But I’m SO HAPPY I WENT.

I was surprised to see a variety of people that I wouldn’t have guessed would be interested in this type of thing! I know we’re all so tired of talking about covid, but I really think the pandemic made me too comfortable with being alone. It was so refreshing to be around people that were gathering for a common interest. The people I got to share an intimate moment of my day with are now who I consider part of my community and I can’t wait to share more moments with them when we have the chance. We talked about the places we’ve been, our favorite types of tea, and just shared general experiences that we’ve had. I loved it. I never thought a tea meditation that included tea and silence at my local library would bring me to making new friends.

Our teacher’s tea pet. It changes colors when hot liquid is poured on top of it! Was very cool.

With all that being said, if you’re someone who is struggling to find community, or like me who’s just been too comfortable with being alone, I invite you to participate in things that may interest you. You may like it your first time, you may not like it at all and will never do it again, but the people you’ll meet, will amaze you. Community is out there if you give it a chance.

If you’re interested in the teas that we sat with, I had my first my first taste of Pu-erh Tea that had been aging since 1988, some very nice and toasty tasting oolong tea, and finished with Pu-erh tea that had been dried in a mandarin orange since 2002. It was amazing.

🍊 Cheers, and happy community hunting.
